Review | Spinach

Review | Spinach

A review of spinach. Be strong to the finish, ’cause you eats your spinach…

Intro

Let’s talk about the most nutrient-rich, low in calorie and down right delicious food out there, that should be part of your daily diet… spinach. Whether it is in the form of a salad, blended into your smoothies or in powder form shaken into your protein powder, you will reap the benefits. Popeye really fucked up and gave me a lot of work to do by claiming that eating canned spinach will make you big and strong like Andre Galvao. But in reality, he was eating some of the most disgusting and least nutritious form of spinach and achieving gains on instant HGH levels. Too bad that those are not the benefits associated with spinach. I am here to talk about good old fashion spinach that is bought fresh, prepared perfectly and eaten properly, for all of the right reasons. Those reasons are essentially endless because spinach is one of the best foods on the planet. In this review you will find out why it is so good for us grapplers (hell and anyone for that matter), how to select the right spinach and then a solid recipe that will change the way you eat. It’s time to eat some spinach. Ba-nana-na-na-nanaaa ba-nana-na-na-naaaaa

Review | Blueberries

Review | Blueberries

A review on Blueberries, blue in color, black in health benefits.

Intro

Fad diet aside, blueberries are fucking awesome. These little blue demons are all over the place and right now is such a great time of year because they are cheap. If you are training day in and day out, working 9 – 5 or just rolling with your couch, you need to introduce blueberries into your life. Even if you are a psychopath and cannot enjoy eating them, have some juice, you will benefit from it. Blueberries are the poster child of eating healthy for a reason besides the fact that they look good, I mean that’s why I am not a poster child for anything, I am not as pretty as a blueberry…that’s a saying right? Blueberries besides being pretty are packed full of antioxidants, good for your brain, low on the glycemic index and down right tasty.  Ultimately food can be good for you and enjoyable to eat, I mean hell, that’s why foods taste certain ways. With this review we will look into really why they are so damn good for you and how they have reached flaming-face-smashing-hammer-wielding-warrior-god status. Also there will be a recipe showcasing the new format that will be found in my upcoming recipe book!

Review | Granola

Review | Granola

A review of Granola, getting to know granola up close and personal but not like “in someones mounted triangle up close and personal.”

Intro

Granola is a staple for all “heath conscious” individuals or just for the majority of us because it is easy and usually pretty damn tasty. Because granola has hung out with the fit kids for so long due to guilt by association is has gotten the rap that if it is granola, it is healthy. Not necessarily true. I personally eat granola a few times a week. I love Chocolate Banana Nut Granola. How healthy does that sound? It’s actually not that bad, but I am not eating just granola by the cup load, nor should you. I have maybe 1/4 – ½ cup at most on my yogurt in the morning and that is it. Reason being granola is a great way to jump start your metabolism but

Summary:

We are all grown ups now, or at least are pretending to be, so get over the stereotype of mushy peas. It is that time of year where the markets are flooded with the same vegetables you see year round but the subtle difference is that they actually taste good because they are in season! So take a break on how to snap arms for 15 minutes and read about how to snap peas in this review.

General Information

We are all peas of a pod when it comes to the fact that we love BJJ, but as you can see just by looking at all the different walks of life when looking across the mat today in class, not all of us are the same, the same goes with peas.

Review | Pineapple

Review | Pineapple

A review of pineapple, the “sweet” training partner.

Summary:

As humans in the 21st century we have a wide variety of foods available to use and the majority of us only eat a select amount. It is staggering how hard it is to get our daily intake of fruits and vegetables. What is it so hard?  Are fruits too much work? Too expensive? Don’t taste good? Well if you believe that, let me try and change that opinion on a work horse fruit that tastes delicious, is super beneficial nutritionally for us, and affordable. You guessed it, what Sponge Bob lives in, Pineapple. Pineapples are chock-full of beneficial vitamins and enzymes that aid in our training on and off the mats. Let’s look at how to prepare pineapples for daily consumption that way we can reap the health benefits of them without all of the headache.

 General Information

Pineapples are all over the market these days. I wont bore you with a history lesson here, I know we are only patient when it comes to setting up our submission chains and still we can rush those from time to time. Long story short, Pineapples are American’s second favorite fruit losing a close decision to bananas.

Review | Yogurt

A review of yogurt, one of the most versatile white belt of the food world out there.

Summary:

Yogurt, no matter what style we are talking about, is chalk full of beneficial qualities for everyday grapplers to stay at home call of duty all stars. No matter what your activity level is, you can benefit from yogurt. In this review you will find that yogurt is made many different ways from all sorts of “milks” whether its dairy based from cows, or non-dairy based from soy beans. Either way as long as it contains heated “milk” and starter culture which is lactic acid bacteria, its yogurt, and its provides us with health benefits.

 General Information

What is Yogurt? Simply put yogurt is a very old recipe that probably originated when someone left some milk out in too warm of an area.

Review | Canned Tuna

Review | Canned Tuna

A review of canned tuna, the most popular protein source available.

Summary:

Canned tuna is one of the top purchased items in grocery stores. Why is that? It is cheap, easy, and an excellent source of ready to eat lean protein. There is a reason why you see all those meat heads from the gym crushing it by the can. That is because canned tuna has some rock star qualities for muscle growth and repair. But what does not need to happen is trying to stomach eating it with just a fork. There are much better ways to enjoy, yes I said enjoy, canned tuna. It is too good to pass up just because of its taste. In this review we will look into understanding canned tunas health benefits and a recipe.

General Information

Tuna from a can, what an odd staple food. But there are reasons for that, as stated its packed full of lean protein, lots of omega-3 fatty acids and its so accessible and affordable. But with that comes draw backs.

Review | Quinoa

Review | Quinoa

A review of quinoa, one of the top tier “grains” for grapplers.

Summary:

Quinoa is an ancient “grain” that dates back thousands of years to the Inca who “believed it increased the stamina of their warriors.” Their view on quinoa relates directly to us as modern day warriors. Also besides it being a black belt in nutritional value it has black belt level versatility within cooking applications. Withing this review of quinoa you will find a recipe, health benefits and other fun facts. Oh and did I mention it is a super source of cheap and easy complete protein that are not egg whites and boiled chicken!? Exactly, I am sold on it too already.

 General Information

As you might have noticed I am using quotes on the word “grain” when talking about quinoa. Why is that? That is because oddly enough quinoa is in fact not a grain but it is a seed. Resulting in it being part of the same competition team as beets, spinach and Swiss chard. There are over 100 varieties of quinoa with origins in South America. The primary source being Peru. We commonly see white, red, black or tricolor quinoa being sold in stores today. So do not fret over which is better for you, just buy it and start eating it on the regular. Quinoa is a monster in the protein zone. You will find 24 g of protein per cup of uncooked quinoa. Also quinoa has a plethora of other benefits which we will dig deeper into later as you read further including heart-healthy fats.
