One of those things would be moving, which is exactly what I have been doing for the past month. Relocating can put a damper on writing and more importantly training. I wont lie, I was getting a bit bummed out about having to not be able to train as much as I would like. But last month when I was going through my final week at the gym in Brooklyn, I was on the mat as much as possible trying to get one last roll in with every one of my training partners. Towards the end of that week I saw one of the beasts in the gym show up finally. I was pumped because I had not had the chance to get that last roll in. Today would be that day. So I go up to my buddy Jake and start in on a little pre-training sarcastic taunting. Then I notice, he doesnt have a bag with him… He then sets up for the verbal submission that shuts down my entire game. He just came from the doctor and it turns out he has torn his ACL. Moving and missing a little training doesn’t sound bad at all anymore as we go into the whole process of what he has to undergo to get back into training. Injuries are never fun and never quick to recover from. Jake knows this because hell, the guy is in school to be a doctor.
Then it dawns on us that this is something that is common in the jiu jitsu world and would make for a great resource for all of those suffering from major injuries. It is not a battle of just healing but also how to mental, physically and nutritionally maintain throughout the process to get back on the mats in full force. None of us eat as much as we should or as often as we would like. Why is that? Because sometimes we are just down right tired after working, commuting and training. The last thing we want to think about is having to make a meal that will take over 10 minutes. So to build off an upcoming article I wrote for Jiu Jitsu Magazine, I cannot stress the importance of bulk cooking for the week enough. I won’t lie I am playing favorites here because frankly I think red cabbage is better. An interview with Emily Kwok, Black Belt World Champion, instructor, foodie, role model, and mother.
If for some reason you train under a rock or are a giant and refuse to learn and accept that smaller people can beat you up, you clearly do not know who Emily Kwok is. For the rest of the BJJ community we are honored to know. Emily is the first female to be awarded a black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in Canada, but that wasnt enough, she then went on to march that black belt down and win Worlds, in gi and no-gi. To bring back the first World’s title back to Canada! Emily is known for a plethora of her achievements on and off the mat. A lot of you will know her from her collaboration with Stephan Kesting of Grapplearts.com to create the fantastic series (and bane of my existence as I am 6’4 100kg) How to Defeat the Bigger Stronger Opponent.
