Guide | The Perfect Way to Wrap

Guide | The Perfect Way to Wrap

A “how to” guide to making the perfect wrap or burrito. Let’s roll, literally.

Intro

It is 2014 and it seems every damn restaurant, deli, coffee shop or lemonade stand offers wraps of some sort these days. Don’t get me wrong, there’s nothing wrong with this but what there is something wrong with, is poorly constructed wraps. What a nightmare it is to be given what appears to be a nice and perfectly wrapped burrito or chipotle-chicken wrap just to find out it is a ticking time bomb set to go off the second you take your first bite. Horrible right? Well, who are you to judge? Are your wrapping skills up to par? And note I said wrapping not rapping, there are no correlations unless you are a rap artist who is deeply passionate about the state of wraps. But before we can judge someone else’s wrapping ability we must gaze into the mirror and see our own reflection and say “hey bucko, can you do it better?” With this guide to making the perfect wrap, you sure as shit will be able to, and will be supplied with some recipes to test your new skills with. So as the title says, let’s roll.

Review | Spinach

Review | Spinach

A review of spinach. Be strong to the finish, ’cause you eats your spinach…

Intro

Let’s talk about the most nutrient-rich, low in calorie and down right delicious food out there, that should be part of your daily diet… spinach. Whether it is in the form of a salad, blended into your smoothies or in powder form shaken into your protein powder, you will reap the benefits. Popeye really fucked up and gave me a lot of work to do by claiming that eating canned spinach will make you big and strong like Andre Galvao. But in reality, he was eating some of the most disgusting and least nutritious form of spinach and achieving gains on instant HGH levels. Too bad that those are not the benefits associated with spinach. I am here to talk about good old fashion spinach that is bought fresh, prepared perfectly and eaten properly, for all of the right reasons. Those reasons are essentially endless because spinach is one of the best foods on the planet. In this review you will find out why it is so good for us grapplers (hell and anyone for that matter), how to select the right spinach and then a solid recipe that will change the way you eat. It’s time to eat some spinach. Ba-nana-na-na-nanaaa ba-nana-na-na-naaaaa

Guide | Poached Eggs

Guide | Poached Eggs

A how to guide to poached eggs. The best way to cook an egg just got easier.

Intro

If you have yet to notice, based on my posts and interview questions, I love breakfast. And I really do feel that it is not only the most important meal of the day but it is usually the most delicious. All of the foods you find on a breakfast menu are keepers and it is amazing how you can see even the most sour, probably ex or current serial killer, dish washer in a restaurant’s, face light up like a child on Christmas morning when “family meal” is breakfast for dinner. What makes breakfast so good? Besides the fact that it is the starting point for your metabolism, it is easy. Think about breakfast, what time of day it’s traditionally at? That’s right, when you are far from high energy or wanting to do a lot of work. Early ass crack of dawn when the only thing you want to work on is how to turn back time and get back in bed again. That is why I love poached eggs. Well I love them because they are creamy, delicious and also cooked without any additional fat. So in this how to guide we will look into the details of a classic technique with a few creative time and energy saving tips, and share with you a stellar recipe.

Review | Almonds

Review | Almonds

A Review of Almonds.
It is time to go nuts, pun intended.

Intro

“Go Nuts” is a good term for this little energy packed, heart-submission defending, weight-regulating nut. Almonds are everywhere, or at least they should be everywhere within your house or apartment. Not in the sense that you struggled to open a bag of them and because you have been doing so much strength and conditioning your rage tore the bag too fast and they went flying in a wonderful storm of “shit, there goes my lunch.” Almonds are packed full of healthy benefits for our training and our lives in general. Did I really just state there’s more to life than only our training?! Justify reading this review of almonds by knowing that everyone that does not have a tree nut allergy should be consuming almonds, whether you train BJJ multiple times a day, or you have no clue what BJJ is and think I am making lewd innuendos incorrectly. Within this review you will find a million dolla prize

Guide | 5 Must Have Tools

Guide | 5 Must Have Tools

We all have 5 go-to submission or passes, but do you have these 5 essential tools of the trade in your kitchen?

Intro

Whether it is at the gym, in the office or in the kitchen there are essential tools of the trade that will make your life easier. Granted they do not overlap…a good knife is not essential for a day in the cubicle (unless you are pulling an Office Space and cleaning some fish you just caught on your desk.) There are a million and one gadgets out there for the kitchen, but are they all needed? Absolutely not. They can be fun to toy around with like the Donkey Guard, but 10 out of 10 times the same result can be achieved with a very basic and fundamental technique or in the metaphor, tool. If you have been following Grappler Gourmet (you are awesome and I cannot thank you enough) here and/or within my Jiu Jitsu Mag articles then you like food and more so are open to learning how to make it. Well now that you have gotten your first stripe here in Grappler Gourmet’s Kitchen Academy it is time to learn about the tools of the trade. I never leave home

Interview | Nelson Puentes

Interview | Nelson Puentes

Interview with Owner of Bamboo Jiu Jitsu, Alliance black belt, and Foodie, the Big Panda of Inverted Gear himself, Nelson Puentes!

This week I got to finally slow myself down and put questions together for a good friend of mine, Nelson Puentes. I say that because when Nelson and I first started talking we had that Step Brothers “Did we just become  best friends? Yup!” moment over food. Primarily over Brussels Sprouts, slow cooked chili and Philly cheese steaks. It was clear that I needed to put some of our conversations into this interview or else I would miss too many gems to share with you all! So without further adieu

Guide | 5 Tips for Weekly Cooking

Guide | 5 Tips for Weekly Cooking

Want to cook in bulk so you always have a fridge full of ready to eat meals without all of the headache? Then strap in, here are my top 5 tips for Cooking for the Week .

Intro

Wouldn’t it be nice to always come home to a fridge full of different proteins, vegetables and starches that are all ready to eat within minutes? I sure as hell enjoy coming home to it after a rough class on the mats. The last thing I want to think of after work and training is “what do I have to cook tonight for dinner.” That’s right I said thinking so imagine how much less I want to actually do the doing. (Not doing the dew, I am not a neon-green-syrupy-beverage-chugging-extreme-sports-junkie) Because of this I always try and implement the practice of devoting Sunday to “bulk day.” This is when I go and get groceries, come right home, unbag them and start to slave over the hot stove. In all it I tend to make enough food for the week so come meal time I just have a minor reheat or 10 minutes of cooking to do and boom, a full dinner is served.  Doesn’t that sound nice? Well let me tell you a secret

Interview | Jon Milan

Interview | Jon Milan

An interview with a good friend of mine, Jon Milan, the first and last person to touch your gi at Origin

Jon is not only a jack of all trades at the awesome Maine based company Origin, he is a BJJ blue belt, proud father, “farmer,” and awesome guy. This interview is very important to me because you will learn more from Jon than from a top level BJJ practitioner because he is more like you and me. We are all not super human athletes such as Buchecha, we will not all be able to eat and live like him.  I have known Jon for awhile now and it started from talking about the Origin bag into us having week long conversations about growing vegetables, raising chickens and pigs, all the way to spider guard and gi grips. Are you ready to learn more about living a lifestyle rather than following a guideline?  Are you one of the many that works and trains on a daily basis? Are you someone that cares about food in general? If you answered yes to any of those, or are just a human being then this interview is for you.

Berimblack-bean Dip

Summary
Meerkatsu and I bring you a dip that will have your back in a pinch! Having a good dip in your cooking arsenal is almost as crucial as having a solid chili recipe. I have adopted this one from a training partner of mine and added some tweaks to it because I love it so much. You get a boat load of protein, carbs and vegetables while enjoying the bite of balsamic vinegar followed by a little spice kick. Having a quart of this in the fridge is a great way to cure your snacking urges.
