Review | Spaghetti Squash

Review | Spaghetti Squash

(Spaghetti) Squash your diet with this super healthy gourd, then your opponents with your superior nutrition.

Intro

We are about to hit the thick of winter now that it is December. In the middle of the holidays and with a lack of competitions going on, we may find ourselves starting to resemble a squash. Unless you are a rooster weight and have the luxury of a great metabolism where you can eat anything and somehow still cut weight. I hate you. I don’t really but I do have to watch what I eat surrounding the Holidays. Because during them I eat like a boss, so should you. One thing that is great though is what foods are available this time of year, especially squashes and cabbages! I love butternut squash but the applications are a touch limited. But have you heard of spaghetti squash? No this is not where pasta comes from but it is where your new favorite food comes from. In this weeks review of

Review | Red Cabbage

Review | Red Cabbage

A review on Red Cabbage, the thing that is acceptable to slap a headlock onto and that is just to put it in your shopping cart.

Intro

Did you know that there’s more vitamin c found in red cabbage than oranges? The marketing team for oranges really did their job well. “I thought cabbage was green?” That statement is correct but there are three major types of cabbage, today we will be glorifying the red kind. I won’t lie I am playing favorites here because frankly I think red cabbage is better. With a world full of coleslaw out there you will be shocked how many people opt for green cabbage when red really brings a whole new perspective on flavor. Not to mention nutritionally offers quiet a lot. As grapplers and generally busy humans we aim for foods that can be made in advanced, last awhile, and offer a lot of nutrients. Look no further than the cabbage stand in your produce section. Let’s control the head of cabbage in this weeks review of Red Cabbage including Prizes Inside

Review | Salmon

Review | Salmon

Slammin’ will get your DQ’d, but Salmon will get you the gold.

Finally right? A review on the most highly recognized health food in the sport. Everyone and their yoga-enlightened grandmothers eat salmon these days. Why is that, because it is fucking tasty? Yup. Or is it the fact that it is ridiculously nutrient rich? Yup. Oh wait, or is it because it is lean and will help you stack on lbs of corded muscle so you can become the top dog at any open mat? Yup, even though we know that is about technique, not muscle. But having that little edge of strength could push you ahead when you find yourself evenly matched skill wise. Back to the point, salmon, the black belt of the meat world for athletes. Sit down, pause Kurt Osiander’s Move of the Week for a second and learn a bit about why salmon is truly so amazing. In this weeks review of salmon you will find out how to

Review | Carrots

Review | Carrots

A review of carrots. You won’t have to say “What’s up Doc?” after this article. You know… because you’ll be eating healthier!

Intro

Bugs bunny wasn’t jacked but he sure had good health and cardio. I credit that to the excessive amount of carrots that furry little bastard ate. So that is why this week I will be looking in depth at one of my and the majority of the worlds, favorite vegetables, carrots. Carrots are nutritionally stacked, abundant, tasty and easy to prepare. If you are doing any sport, let alone Jiu Jitsu, you should be stocking up on your vegetable intake, and the list of vegetables better include carrots. Carrots should be eaten fresh and can be prepared in a wide variety of ways so you have no excuse, just like how you have no excuse to be missing class. Roasted, raw, pickled or hell, even baked into a damn cake, carrots can make their way into your diet. Just do not eat too many, you might turn orange. I guess that might save you some money if you live the Jersey Shore lifestyle. In this weeks review I break down the nutritional benefits, give some tips & tricks and of course my favorite carrot recipe, which is easy for even the white belts of the kitchen.

Guide | 5 Must Have BJJ Supplements

Guide | 5 Must Have BJJ Supplements

Shake, rattle, then roll; The Grapple Gourmet’s guide to the best BJJ supplements.

If you drink what you should eat, then know what you drink. You often hear the protein shakers start going all at once the second class is over with. Is that the only time of the day to be using your shaker filled with mystery powders ranging from chocolate mint flavors to poison “bubblegum?” No. There is a vast world of supplements out on the market and that is because as we progress in science and technology, we create, and develop a finer tuned catalog of supplements for each purpose. Rather than just having “Protein Powder” we have blends, whey, casein, super pump up uber bulk hope cans with your bare hands powders. What I am saying is there are a million and one different products out there and without knowing which ones truly benefit our training, you are a sailor lost at sea. Well it is time to fire up the lighthouse and show you to the coast of the best supplements to take for BJJ, its pretty important, that’s for shore (see what I did there?) It is not all about getting pumped up anymore, but improving our performance, recovery and overall healthy.

Why You Should Be Drinking Green Tea

Why You Should Be Drinking Green Tea

Are you down with the Green? And I don’t mean Prop 19.

Are you sick of water or how about sick of trying to make big hard weight cuts? Well there is one simple solution that could help cure those ailments commonly found within the sport of Jiu Jitsu, Green Tea. Green tea has been proved time and time again to be one of the best damn beverages on the planet for athletes. The amount of benefits packed within the steady consumption of green tea are ridiculous and often overlooked because hey, its just tea right? Green tea should be a staple in every grapplers diet. If you are only consuming it at your post IBJJF competition all-you-can-stuff-in-your-face sushi celebrations, you wont be gaining much, but if you regularly have a glass, you can increase your chances of being at said celebration with a gold medal around your neck or least of all, feeling a lot healthier and happier. But do allow me to

To be the best you must work with the best

As many of you may or may not know I have had the pleasure of creating, in addition to for the site, some fun articles for the one and only Jiu Jitsu Mag. We may not be able to make it into the gym or onto the mats as often as we may like to but luckily there are other ways to keep up with our “training.” The BJJ lifestyle is labeled as such because it truly extends beyond the time we spend drilling, rolling and competing. Your jiu jitsu brain starts to creep into your everyday, you may find yourself at a lull in work and day dreaming about how a leg drag from open guard leads straight into a tibia break. But it should extend beyond only the techniques, there are many other major ways we can supplement our training, you know…like food…that is really the entire premise behind what I do! With that being said, Jiu Jitsu Magazine is truly one of the best
