Product Review | Purps Part I

Purple belt on the outside, black belt on the inside, upgrade your go-to drink.

What are you drinking on a daily basis, water, fruit juice, and sports drinks? Are you getting the most nutrients you can from those beverage choices? Granted water is the liquid of life and should never be replaced, but what about those other thirst quenchers. What would you say to a beverage that is down right delicious, all organic and absolutely great for you that you have never heard of? Well the Mendes Brothers preach about the stuff, I’ve got your attention now don’t I? Well as you know there are loads of benefits from purple foods, most all of which fall within the glorified category of super-foods. I will not go into it because that would be spoiling an upcoming Jiu Jitsu Magazine article. Long story short, you do not want to be skimping as much as you are on purple foods. Luckily you will not be anymore because of a fantastic product developed by a World-Champion athlete and Brazilian Jiu jitsu practitioner along with a pretty awesome scientist. What is this product you might ask? Purps. This week I will be reviewing all 4 of their products and doing the leg work for you before you choose to promote your life’s heath by the uniting of nature and science by the Purps team.

Who’s behind Purps?

If life were a can and skills & knowledge were vitamins and minerals, this would be a picture of Purps Fuel.
If life were a can and skills & knowledge were vitamins and minerals, this would be a picture of Purps Fuel.

A relatively new company created by multiple time World-Champion Pro Surfer and Jiu Jitsu enthusiast, Kelly Slater. Kelly set out with a few friends, Dr Chris Shaumburg, the food scientist and Pat Tenore, the brand guru, to create a revolutionary purple super food based product line. Their focus is to use a unique blend of 6 purple foods (mangosteen, maqui berry, acai berry, grape, blueberry, blackberry,) three exotic and three domestic products. The ingredients are then used to create 4 different blends to fit within the mainstream of multi-vitamin shot, multi-vitamin powder for travel, energy supplement and hydration drink.

What’s in Purps?

Purps uses what they call the “Purple Life Formula” in all of their products. Each product has a slightly different blend of the 6 berries that have been fine tuned to fit the needs of the product. I am going to do what Purps does with their ingredients and go straight to the source:Purps Berries

The Purps Proprietary Organic Purple Life Formula is harvested from this earth, non-GMO and formulated with a purpose using six purple superfruits from around the world. The blend of whole organic mangosteen, maqui berry, açaí berry, blueberry, grape and blackberry is a rich source of phytonutrients, including a variety of polyphenols.

Why do Purps products contain an insoluble fraction?

Insoluble [in-sol-yuh-buh l] adjective 1. incapable of being dissolved

Fraction [frak-shuh n] noun 1. a part as distinct from the whole of anything; portion or section

The insoluble fraction is part of the Purps Proprietary Organic Purple Life Formula from this earth. The Purps superfruits contain the insoluble phytonutrient-packed skin or rind. Since the skin or rind can’t dissolve in water, the insoluble fraction spends most of its time hanging-out at the bottom of the bottle or can. Before you open up your Purps, always shake well and don’t leave any of the good stuff behind.

Energy Supplement:

Clean can, clean energy, clean mind. Once you hit purple I hear there is a level of calm within your game, this must be what it feels like.

The most popular item from the company is their all organic, all natural and nutrient packed Purps Fuel. This product is designed with the Proprietary Organic Purple Life Formula that all of the other products share. But the difference between each product is the quantities of each Mangosteen, Maqui Berry, Acai Berry, Blueberry, Grape and Blackberry are mixed around to maximize the effects of the given product. In addition to a power house kick of purple foods you have mixed in their natural energy formula that contains Yerba Mate, Green Tea, Guarana, and Panax Gineseng. Can you feel the energy flowing through you already? I took this product for a test run 40 minutes before an hour long randori class, I figured there was no better proving ground.

Imagine a less sweet, more natural and tasting grape juice with a few bubbles in it along with a hint of blueberries. By far the Fuel tastes more of a very refreshing juice than the overly sweet and sticky energy supplements. You will notice that it is carbonated but not enough to leave you feeling like you have bubble guts during the warm up in class. I would give it 9 out of 10 on taste because it was a little tart towards the end. But that happens all the same after you drink any type of juice.

I truly noticed that the energy boost that I received was kind of sneaky in the sense that I was at the gym and next thing I know I had a enhanced sense of clarity and focus, felt like my body was ready to rock and roll without the quick shock that most energy supplements come with and surely no jitters were involved. The energy felt very natural and after the class was all said and done, I still felt great and could train longer.

Best time to drink:

30 – 45 minutes before training or when you need a mid day pick me up.

12 pack will run you $44.99, that’s around $3.75 per can, Id say it is very worth that.

If you want to be bouncing off walls and crash later, this is not the drink for you, if you want a tasty beverage packed with beneficial vitamins and minerals that will leave you with the feeling of being truly awake and naturally energized, snag one of these stylish cans.

Dr Chris suggests that “the 12 oz energy supplement is the most popular entry product for the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu community.” Once you get hooked you will start to see that it might be easier to stock up on the multi-vitamin shot too which is designed for daily use to help turn you into a beast nutritionally.

Multi-vitamin shot:

Great things come in small packages. You know there is the featherweight at the gym that always works you.

Also known as Purps Vita. This product was designed with a routine in mind. Contrary to what you think when buying a “shot” bottle, this is not 5-hour energy but rather a daily supplement packed with phytonutrients, antioxidants and essential vitamins and minerals to enhance your well being through the Purple Life Formula. With that being said it is not a one and done kind of situation, but rather a daily (tasty) shot you take routinely to bolster your overall nutritional intake. Most of us are slacking when it comes to our purple food consumption. Yes I am talking to you boiled chicken and steamed broccoli guy. The team at Purps has made taking a routine multi-vitamin a lot more easy and enjoyable that choking down horse sized pills that come in a stinky little bag. Have your box of Vita hanging in your fridge and grab one every morning before you head out, of toss it in your bag for lunch time. Worst case scenario, which is not that bad of a situation, you can take it at night too. Just as long as your take it daily.

Once you twist the top off you still battle through a freshness seal to be hit with a very unique scent. I would describe it as Acai and crushed grapes. Since the smell is pretty strong I was fully anticipating the flavor to be just as strong but to my surprise it was very mild and pleasant. You feel like you are tasting all of the vitamins and minerals but in a good way. I would pin the Vita to be closer to the Acai flavor spectrum with hints of blackberry. The best part is the fact that it is not overly sweet nor tart and surely not thick and lingering like most other drinks that come in this type of concentrated container. I have a feeling that you will run into the risk of wanting to drink more than one a day rather than not keep on track and skipping days. 10 out of 10 for sure on the overall taste spectrum, what a refreshing way to get your vitamins in and your day started with no hassle.

Best time to drink:

Anytime of day, but daily. I find the morning is the best place to establish a routine because there are only so many limiting factors that can throw it off. Also who doesn’t want to start the day off with a delicious purple treat?

Leave it to Kelly Slater...

  • All organic, Non-GMO, with no artificial colors, flavors or preservatives.

12 pack will run you $29.99, so ~$2.50 per shot. Stock up, it is less expensive than those multi-vitamin pill packs you are buying that you end up pissing away anyways.

If you diet is lacking in the purple food department or even vitamin and mineral department and you do not want to try and choke down those mystery pills, treat yourself to a box or two of Vitas. The only downside I can see is for a month’s supply you will be dropping $60 and will have to plan your reordering properly. Most of those pill packs are just as expensive and far from as enjoyable.
