Did you hear a bump in the night? Maybe it is the boogeyman coming to turn bad jiu jitsu players into good ones, or to talk about us about his diet!
This weeks interview is with 10th Planet San Diego‘s Richie “Boogeyman” Martinez. I had the awesome experience a few weeks ago of flying out to compete at the Dream Jiu Jitsu’s Baddest Blue. One of the highlights was getting to meet Richie and his brother Geo. After watching him work with some of his students that were competing you cannot help but notice a high level of passion and pride in the sport itself and more so in his students. Seeing this I had to get Richie in for an interview because he is truly the Boogeyman of the Jiu Jitsu world, instead of scaring bad kids into being good, he teaches BJJ in a way that leaves you feeling good. Within the first minute of meeting Boogey he was asking if anyone wanted to go to Starbucks in the parking lot, I needed more information than that to give you all so here we go.
Welcome to GrapplerGourmet.com Richie. Would you please introduce yourself to these fine people.
My name is Richie Boogeyman Martinez I am a black belt under bravo and I earned my black belt in 3 years and 11 months which makes me one of his fastest student to earn his BB under him. I’m also a pro MMA fighter and I am signed to Titan FC. But if you don’t know me for my Jiu Jitsu or MMA there is a chance you might know me as a bboy do to the fact that I’ve been break dancing for about 15 years
So I have to ask, how much were you training in your time to black belt, 2-3 a days?
Man I was training 3 times a day and sometimes me and my Brother Geo would have midnight sessions to get that extra work in.
What is your average everyday diet like? Do you follow a certain guideline?
Yea I’m a pescatarian so the only type of meat I eat is sea food but other than that I eat a lot of veggies fruit and yogurt.
Are you a pescatarian for any certain reasoning? I mean besides the fact that most seafood is delicious.
I mean besides the fact that most seafood is delicious. Yeah I love seafood, but I got real sick eating chicken once from this nice restaurant so after that I stayed away from other meats and 4 years later Im still on that same situation.
Do you run a cheat day or as other put it, an “earned day?”
No not really I train real hard so I figure if I trying hard enough I should be able to eat most the stuff that I want.
I personally am a breakfast nut. What is your breakfast of choice?
COFFEE!!!! I love me some coffee. I usually do coffee until I eat lunch.
How do you take your coffee?
Straight to the veins hahaha nah I actually drink tons of Caveman Coffee with MCT oil, Butter and coconut milk
What do you think is the most important food or drink for training as such a high level?
I think fruits is real important, it has the right type of sugars that will give you the right energy.
Do you feel that the beard improves your choke game but hinders eating abilities? I mean hell mine is minor yet I often find all sorts of snacks “saved for later” in it.
Hahaha I get asked that a lot but my days of saving snacks in my beard are over I’ve gotten use to eating with a beard after a few years.. But once in a while I surprise myself. *laughs*
What is your pre-training and post-training intake like?
I usually eat fruit or drink fruit shake and after training water lots of water and maybe a protein bar
In what ways does your competition diet change from your normal diet?
Competition diet is hard because that means no thai food, pasta, cheese cake or ice cream!!!! Ahhhhh it kills me *laughs* and when I’m on diet I usually don’t do bread either.
What do you eat the night before, day of and post competition?
Do you have any pre-competition eating rituals, good luck foods or anything along those lines?
My coaches hate when I do this after MMA weigh ins but I usually do Pedialyte and honey mustard Pringles but I’ve gotten better because now I don’t finish them all I’ll only have a few hahaha.
Does your diet differ when preparing for BJJ competitions vs MMA fights?
No not really, cutting weight is all the same basically sweet potatoes, fruits, yogurt and lots of water.
What are your top 5 favorite ingredients/foods?
Thai food, Pasta, Grilled cheese (from in n out burger,) Fish tacos, and Acai bowls. Is coffee food? Cus if it is it’s totally on that list HA!
Being in SoCal you are surrounded by some killer food. What is a must have meal for those visiting out there whether it is for Worlds, Dream or vacation?
So many foods out here but it comes down to where you are at.. If you are in San Diego Mexican food and if you eat meat then you Have to get Carne Asada Fries is the SD specialty.. Other than that I feel we have great Thai food out here and other than that you always have good ole In N Out
You and Bravo have some killer names for some of your techniques(I am currently drilling the boogey,) if you were to rename any move using a food term what move would it be and what name would you give it?
Kimura = chicken wings, twister = cinnamon bun. hahaha that’s a hard one.
If there was a skill or cooking technique that you would like to learn to improve your arsenal what would it be? Or is there a food you wish you knew how to make?
I think it would be dope to learn how to make some bomb sushi rolls but not the crappy looking ones either.
If today was your last day, what would your last meal be and what song would be playing?
My last meal would be shrimp pad Thai and the song is a hard one ‘cus Im a music freak but I would say weird fishes by Radiohead
