Did you hear a bump in the night? Maybe it is the boogeyman coming to turn bad jiu jitsu players into good ones, or to talk about us about his diet!

This weeks interview is with 10th Planet San Diego‘s Richie “Boogeyman” Martinez. I had the awesome experience a few weeks ago of flying out to compete at the Dream Jiu Jitsu’s Baddest Blue. One of the highlights was getting to meet Richie and his brother Geo. After watching him work with some of his students that were competing you cannot help but notice a high level of passion and pride in the sport itself and more so in his students. Seeing this I had to get Richie in for an interview because he is truly the Boogeyman of the Jiu Jitsu world, instead of scaring bad kids into being good, he teaches BJJ in a way that leaves you feeling good. Within the first minute of meeting Boogey he was asking if anyone wanted to go to Starbucks in the parking lot, I needed more information than that to give you all so here we go.

The Boogeyman cometh to ensure all of your chokes are snug and tight.

So I have to ask, how much were you training in your time to black belt, 2-3 a days?

Man I was training 3 times a day and sometimes me and my Brother Geo would have midnight sessions to get that extra work in.

What is your average everyday diet like? Do you follow a certain guideline?

Yea I’m a pescatarian so the only type of meat I eat is sea food but other than that I eat a lot of veggies fruit and yogurt.

Are you a pescatarian for any certain reasoning? I mean besides the fact that most seafood is delicious.

I mean besides the fact that most seafood is delicious. Yeah I love seafood, but I got real sick eating chicken once from this nice restaurant so after that I stayed away from other meats and 4 years later Im still on that same situation.

I think fruits is real important, it has the right type of sugars that will give you the right energy.

Do you feel that the beard improves your choke game but hinders eating abilities? I mean hell mine is minor yet I often find all sorts of snacks “saved for later” in it.

Hahaha I get asked that a lot but my days of saving snacks in my beard are over I’ve gotten use to eating with a beard after a few years.. But once in a while I surprise myself. *laughs*

Competition diet is hard because that means no thai food, pasta, cheese cake or ice cream!!!! Ahhhhh it kills me *laughs* and when I’m on diet I usually don’t do bread either.

I try to eat light so I’ll eat some sweet potato with other type of veggies or maybe some Acai bowls if I’m at a BJJ comp or something.Coaching

Do you have any pre-competition eating rituals, good luck foods or anything along those lines?

My coaches hate when I do this after MMA weigh ins but I usually do Pedialyte and honey mustard Pringles but I’ve gotten better because now I don’t finish them all I’ll only have a few hahaha.
