Interview | Bernardo Faria

Interview | Bernardo Faria

Find out how to be a World Champion such as Bernardo Faria off the mats. He is a man of (deep)half-guard and whole nutrition.

Bernardo is a beast, and one of the nicest guys on the planet. How can you not be when you are sharing the mat with and working with Marcelo Garcia on a day to day basis? At only 27 he has already stacked up quiet the impressive tournament resume before and after receiving his black belt in 2009 under Ricardo Marques, a Carlson Gracie Black Belt. (He is currently the 6th ranked Black Belt in the World.) Bernardo then went on to join the Alliance in Sao Paulo under “The General” Fabio Gurgel. Bernardo now lives and teaches at Marcelo Garcia’s Academy in NYC. I am keeping Bernardo’s bio short because you should

Balls of protein with a candy cane, all you wanted for Christmas right?

With the holidays putting pressure on out wallets and more importantly, our diets, we need to get creative. Does this mean you cannot eat sweets and enjoy all of the festive flavors you’ve grown up to love and throw your diets to the side? Absolutely not. We can still hit those key ingredients and flavors while using a little grappler gourmet ingenuity! What do we have laying around the house at all times and some of us practically live off? Protein powder. What’s delicious this time of year? Chocolate and candy canes. So I was thinking why not create a protein packed snack alternative that will cure those urges and stack on muscle rather than soft bellies? Boom, the answer to all of your prayers. (no it’s not a free collection of every shoyoroll gi ever made.)

Review | Spinach

Review | Spinach

A review of spinach. Be strong to the finish, ’cause you eats your spinach…

Intro

Let’s talk about the most nutrient-rich, low in calorie and down right delicious food out there, that should be part of your daily diet… spinach. Whether it is in the form of a salad, blended into your smoothies or in powder form shaken into your protein powder, you will reap the benefits. Popeye really fucked up and gave me a lot of work to do by claiming that eating canned spinach will make you big and strong like Andre Galvao. But in reality, he was eating some of the most disgusting and least nutritious form of spinach and achieving gains on instant HGH levels. Too bad that those are not the benefits associated with spinach. I am here to talk about good old fashion spinach that is bought fresh, prepared perfectly and eaten properly, for all of the right reasons. Those reasons are essentially endless because spinach is one of the best foods on the planet. In this review you will find out why it is so good for us grapplers (hell and anyone for that matter), how to select the right spinach and then a solid recipe that will change the way you eat. It’s time to eat some spinach. Ba-nana-na-na-nanaaa ba-nana-na-na-naaaaa

Review | Blueberries

Review | Blueberries

A review on Blueberries, blue in color, black in health benefits.

Intro

Fad diet aside, blueberries are fucking awesome. These little blue demons are all over the place and right now is such a great time of year because they are cheap. If you are training day in and day out, working 9 – 5 or just rolling with your couch, you need to introduce blueberries into your life. Even if you are a psychopath and cannot enjoy eating them, have some juice, you will benefit from it. Blueberries are the poster child of eating healthy for a reason besides the fact that they look good, I mean that’s why I am not a poster child for anything, I am not as pretty as a blueberry…that’s a saying right? Blueberries besides being pretty are packed full of antioxidants, good for your brain, low on the glycemic index and down right tasty.  Ultimately food can be good for you and enjoyable to eat, I mean hell, that’s why foods taste certain ways. With this review we will look into really why they are so damn good for you and how they have reached flaming-face-smashing-hammer-wielding-warrior-god status. Also there will be a recipe showcasing the new format that will be found in my upcoming recipe book!

Berimblack-bean Dip

Summary
Meerkatsu and I bring you a dip that will have your back in a pinch! Having a good dip in your cooking arsenal is almost as crucial as having a solid chili recipe. I have adopted this one from a training partner of mine and added some tweaks to it because I love it so much. You get a boat load of protein, carbs and vegetables while enjoying the bite of balsamic vinegar followed by a little spice kick. Having a quart of this in the fridge is a great way to cure your snacking urges.

“Chicken Noodle Soup” Pasta Salad

Summary
Meerkatsu and I bring you a play on a classic with this recipe! How many of you have grown up destroying chicken noodle soup? Better question, who loves having a big container of pasta salad in the fridge to have for a quick snack of full meal? The answer to both questions is all of you. Now you can have both! This recipe is a bit more involved but nothing crazy. Instead of traditional mayo I use yogurt to lean the dish out and I also soak the pasta with the chicken broth we made by cooking the chicken. The pasta really absorbed the flavor which results in a velvety and rich pasta salad that is also light and refreshing.

Meerkatsu and I bring you a solid side dish to bring to the table, literally! We all can cook chicken, salmon, steak and some sort of starch. But what is your vegetable side dish game like? Are you sick of boring steamed broccoli or mushy spinach? I sure as shit am. That’s why I would rather showcase the vegetables and make my protein source the after thought. This dish will change your look on spinach and with a little added soft boiled egg you can even bulk it up and have it as a salad all on its own!
