That’s right! More about the Orange. The most important color in Jiu Jitsu that you can award to yourself.

As you know from last weeks article (you read last weeks article right?!) oranges come in many different shapes, sizes and flavors. Slammin’ will get your DQ’d, but Salmon will get you the gold.
Finally right? A review on the most highly recognized health food in the sport. Everyone and their yoga-enlightened grandmothers eat salmon these days. Why is that, because it is fucking tasty? Yup. Or is it the fact that it is ridiculously nutrient rich? Yup. Oh wait, or is it because it is lean and will help you stack on lbs of corded muscle so you can become the top dog at any open mat? Yup, even though we know that is about technique, not muscle. But having that little edge of strength could push you ahead when you find yourself evenly matched skill wise. Back to the point, salmon, the black belt of the meat world for athletes. Sit down, pause Kurt Osiander’s Move of the Week for a second and learn a bit about why salmon is truly so amazing. In this weeks review of salmon you will find out how to Continue reading
(Spaghetti) Squash your diet with this super healthy gourd, then your opponents with your superior nutrition.
We are about to hit the thick of winter now that it is December. In the middle of the holidays and with a lack of competitions going on, we may find ourselves starting to resemble a squash. Unless you are a rooster weight and have the luxury of a great metabolism where you can eat anything and somehow still cut weight. I hate you. I don’t really but I do have to watch what I eat surrounding the Holidays. Because during them I eat like a boss, so should you. One thing that is great though is what foods are available this time of year, especially squashes and cabbages! I love butternut squash but the applications are a touch limited. But have you heard of spaghetti squash? No this is not where pasta comes from but it is where your new favorite food comes from. In this weeks review of Continue reading
A review of carrots. You won’t have to say “What’s up Doc?” after this article. You know… because you’ll be eating healthier!
Bugs bunny wasn’t jacked but he sure had good health and cardio. I credit that to the excessive amount of carrots that furry little bastard ate. So that is why this week I will be looking in depth at one of my and the majority of the worlds, favorite vegetables, carrots. Carrots are nutritionally stacked, abundant, tasty and easy to prepare. If you are doing any sport, let alone Jiu Jitsu, you should be stocking up on your vegetable intake, and the list of vegetables better include carrots. Carrots should be eaten fresh and can be prepared in a wide variety of ways so you have no excuse, just like how you have no excuse to be missing class. Roasted, raw, pickled or hell, even baked into a damn cake, carrots can make their way into your diet. Just do not eat too many, you might turn orange. I guess that might save you some money if you live the Jersey Shore lifestyle. In this weeks review I break down the nutritional benefits, give some tips & tricks and of course my favorite carrot recipe, which is easy for even the white belts of the kitchen. Continue reading
A review of spinach. Be strong to the finish, ’cause you eats your spinach…
Let’s talk about the most nutrient-rich, low in calorie and down right delicious food out there, that should be part of your daily diet… spinach. Whether it is in the form of a salad, blended into your smoothies or in powder form shaken into your protein powder, you will reap the benefits. Popeye really fucked up and gave me a lot of work to do by claiming that eating canned spinach will make you big and strong like Andre Galvao. But in reality, he was eating some of the most disgusting and least nutritious form of spinach and achieving gains on instant HGH levels. Too bad that those are not the benefits associated with spinach. I am here to talk about good old fashion spinach that is bought fresh, prepared perfectly and eaten properly, for all of the right reasons. Those reasons are essentially endless because spinach is one of the best foods on the planet. In this review you will find out why it is so good for us grapplers (hell and anyone for that matter), how to select the right spinach and then a solid recipe that will change the way you eat. It’s time to eat some spinach. Ba-nana-na-na-nanaaa ba-nana-na-na-naaaaa Continue reading
A Review of Almonds.
It is time to go nuts, pun intended.
“Go Nuts” is a good term for this little energy packed, heart-submission defending, weight-regulating nut. Almonds are everywhere, or at least they should be everywhere within your house or apartment. Not in the sense that you struggled to open a bag of them and because you have been doing so much strength and conditioning your rage tore the bag too fast and they went flying in a wonderful storm of “shit, there goes my lunch.” Almonds are packed full of healthy benefits for our training and our lives in general. Did I really just state there’s more to life than only our training?! Justify reading this review of almonds by knowing that everyone that does not have a tree nut allergy should be consuming almonds, whether you train BJJ multiple times a day, or you have no clue what BJJ is and think I am making lewd innuendos incorrectly. Within this review you will find a million dolla prize
A review on Red Cabbage, the thing that is acceptable to slap a headlock onto and that is just to put it in your shopping cart.
Did you know that there’s more vitamin c found in red cabbage than oranges? The marketing team for oranges really did their job well. “I thought cabbage was green?” That statement is correct but there are three major types of cabbage, today we will be glorifying the red kind. I won’t lie I am playing favorites here because frankly I think red cabbage is better. With a world full of coleslaw out there you will be shocked how many people opt for green cabbage when red really brings a whole new perspective on flavor. Not to mention nutritionally offers quiet a lot. As grapplers and generally busy humans we aim for foods that can be made in advanced, last awhile, and offer a lot of nutrients. Look no further than the cabbage stand in your produce section. Let’s control the head of cabbage in this weeks review of Red Cabbage including Prizes Inside
A review on Coconut Water, don’t be a nut, know why you should drink it.
As athletes, whether you are a weekend warrior training when you can or a competitive powerhouse training twice a day 6-7 days a week I am sure at some point you have had coconut water. Or at least seen people drinking it. Why is that? Is it a fad? Or is it actually beneficial for you and the holy grail of hydration? What benefits can be truly had by drinking coconut water that sometimes comes in different colors and tastes like liquid cardboard? Let’s crack open the top of this topic like a machete shearing through a young coconut and get into the sweet nectar with this review of coconut water! Continue reading
A review on Blueberries, blue in color, black in health benefits.
Fad diet aside, blueberries are fucking awesome. These little blue demons are all over the place and right now is such a great time of year because they are cheap. If you are training day in and day out, working 9 – 5 or just rolling with your couch, you need to introduce blueberries into your life. Even if you are a psychopath and cannot enjoy eating them, have some juice, you will benefit from it. Blueberries are the poster child of eating healthy for a reason besides the fact that they look good, I mean that’s why I am not a poster child for anything, I am not as pretty as a blueberry…that’s a saying right? Blueberries besides being pretty are packed full of antioxidants, good for your brain, low on the glycemic index and down right tasty. Ultimately food can be good for you and enjoyable to eat, I mean hell, that’s why foods taste certain ways. With this review we will look into really why they are so damn good for you and how they have reached flaming-face-smashing-hammer-wielding-warrior-god status. Also there will be a recipe showcasing the new format that will be found in my upcoming recipe book! Continue reading
A review of Granola, getting to know granola up close and personal but not like “in someones mounted triangle up close and personal.”
Granola is a staple for all “heath conscious” individuals or just for the majority of us because it is easy and usually pretty damn tasty. Because granola has hung out with the fit kids for so long due to guilt by association is has gotten the rap that if it is granola, it is healthy. Not necessarily true. I personally eat granola a few times a week. I love Chocolate Banana Nut Granola. How healthy does that sound? It’s actually not that bad, but I am not eating just granola by the cup load, nor should you. I have maybe 1/4 – ½ cup at most on my yogurt in the morning and that is it. Reason being granola is a great way to jump start your metabolism but Continue reading
