Review | Spaghetti Squash

Review | Spaghetti Squash

(Spaghetti) Squash your diet with this super healthy gourd, then your opponents with your superior nutrition.

Intro

We are about to hit the thick of winter now that it is December. In the middle of the holidays and with a lack of competitions going on, we may find ourselves starting to resemble a squash. Unless you are a rooster weight and have the luxury of a great metabolism where you can eat anything and somehow still cut weight. I hate you. I don’t really but I do have to watch what I eat surrounding the Holidays. Because during them I eat like a boss, so should you. One thing that is great though is what foods are available this time of year, especially squashes and cabbages! I love butternut squash but the applications are a touch limited. But have you heard of spaghetti squash? No this is not where pasta comes from but it is where your new favorite food comes from. In this weeks review of

Review | Banana

Review | Banana

A Review of Bananas, every monkey, err grappler’s favorite fruit.

Intro

Bananas, we’ve all had one. Whether you are a health nut or a slob, you cannot say you didn’t enjoy it either. I could credit it to an evolutionary viewpoint that we are all monkeys and what do monkeys love? Exactly. But this is not a article on creation or anything but more so a review on bananas. Bananas are packed full of nutritional benefits yet sometimes get mixed reviews. Are they worth eating? When is the best time to eat them? “I’m sick of eating just straight up bananas how can I switch it up?” Are these question you ask yourself? Of course they are and in this review they will be answered and I’ll even supply you with my favorite pre-training recipe that is so tasty and easy you’ll slap yourself for never trying it before.

Guide | 5 Must Have BJJ Supplements

Guide | 5 Must Have BJJ Supplements

Shake, rattle, then roll; The Grapple Gourmet’s guide to the best BJJ supplements.

If you drink what you should eat, then know what you drink. You often hear the protein shakers start going all at once the second class is over with. Is that the only time of the day to be using your shaker filled with mystery powders ranging from chocolate mint flavors to poison “bubblegum?” No. There is a vast world of supplements out on the market and that is because as we progress in science and technology, we create, and develop a finer tuned catalog of supplements for each purpose. Rather than just having “Protein Powder” we have blends, whey, casein, super pump up uber bulk hope cans with your bare hands powders. What I am saying is there are a million and one different products out there and without knowing which ones truly benefit our training, you are a sailor lost at sea. Well it is time to fire up the lighthouse and show you to the coast of the best supplements to take for BJJ, its pretty important, that’s for shore (see what I did there?) It is not all about getting pumped up anymore, but improving our performance, recovery and overall healthy.

Why You Should Be Drinking Green Tea

Why You Should Be Drinking Green Tea

Are you down with the Green? And I don’t mean Prop 19.

Are you sick of water or how about sick of trying to make big hard weight cuts? Well there is one simple solution that could help cure those ailments commonly found within the sport of Jiu Jitsu, Green Tea. Green tea has been proved time and time again to be one of the best damn beverages on the planet for athletes. The amount of benefits packed within the steady consumption of green tea are ridiculous and often overlooked because hey, its just tea right? Green tea should be a staple in every grapplers diet. If you are only consuming it at your post IBJJF competition all-you-can-stuff-in-your-face sushi celebrations, you wont be gaining much, but if you regularly have a glass, you can increase your chances of being at said celebration with a gold medal around your neck or least of all, feeling a lot healthier and happier. But do allow me to

Interview | Jonathan Satava

Interview | Jonathan Satava

Interview with accomplished and rising Marcelo Garcia BJJ stand out Jonathan Satava!

Let’s start with everyone’s favorite topic, can you give us a little about who you are. Accomplishments, background, sponsors, affiliations, blood type, list of fears, etc. Kidding, mainly just the first 4 things there and generally anything you wish to tell about yourself.

Well first, thank you for the interest and opportunity. I was born and raised on Long Island and I’m the middle child with two sisters. I’d say I was an active kid growing up.  I played baseball, skateboarded, snowboarded, ultimate Frisbee, and everyone’s favorite – manhunt.  In middle school, I did some wrestling but broke my collarbone during practice and never got back into it.

TBT | Meerkatu’s Food Week

TBT | Meerkatu’s Food Week

A year ago today this happened, one of the most exciting events in Gg history; I would like to say THANK YOU to Seymour and everyone else who showed their support in this event!

This past weekend concluded the awesome week long Food collaboration with Meerkatsu. The positive responses were staggering and has really made it all feel worth the while. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is more than just a sport, it really is a community and a lifestyle. Meerkatsu and myself have really embraced that theory and try and bring more than just on-the-mat techniques to the community. Why? Because if you do BJJ you know that it is more than just a hobby or a short term fix, it is a long term commitment and a way of life. To maintain you need to properly prepare yourself mentally and physically on a daily basis and what better way to do so than

Guide | Positive Effects of Competition Preparation

Guide | Positive Effects of Competition Preparation

How you are winning gold in life before you even step foot on the mat come competition day.

There are a few different types of people found in every gym, you have the die hard competition guys/gals, the people who would compete but always find a reason not to, the ones who love the art but have no interest in competitions and finally those who are there only because it is a fun and different exercise. Yes those people exist.  But ultimately I feel that everyone should try a competition at least once in their Jiu Jitsu careers because of the benefits that come from the preparation involved. Notice how I did not say the medals, the matches or any of that? That is because after many competition prep seasons I have learned that you earn the most out of the time leading up to the competition and not only from a Jiu Jitsu stand point, but overall lifestyle.  Here are the most important lessons

Battling Post-Competition Soreness with Food

Battling Post-Competition Soreness with Food

Win your match against soreness via this Food Triangle from Diet La Reliefa.

My word play is almost as painful as the soreness in the days following a hard week of training topped off with a brutal competition. I am currently experiencing this pain myself. The trouble is, not only does it suck to have your forearms shot in daily life, it sucks because there is nothing you want to do more after competing than to get back on the mats and work on your mistakes. It can be very frustrating to be on the mats, sore as shit and now you are faced with feeling worse about your performance because you cannot give it your all to fix the errors. But instead of sitting there and complaining there is a simple and delicious way to fight off the weak grips, stiff neck and tin-man like flexibility. Notice how I said delicious? That should be a clear sign that I am not talking about just taking a fist full of ibuprofen or NSAID. But rather embracing the natural pain killers and recovery elixirs Mother Nature has created for us in this list of foods. Battling Post-Competition Soreness with Food is a great way to get back in the saddle and ride your way to recovery, repair and pain relief. Let’s S-roll through this article, my grips are shot but my brain is not.
