We may not be able to make it into the gym or onto the mats as often as we may like to but luckily there are other ways to keep up with our “training.” The BJJ lifestyle is labeled as such because it truly extends beyond the time we spend drilling, rolling and competing. Let’s start with everyone’s favorite topic, can you give us a little about who you are. Accomplishments, background, sponsors, affiliations, blood type, list of fears, etc. Kidding, mainly just the first 4 things there and generally anything you wish to tell about yourself.

Well first, thank you for the interest and opportunity. I was born and raised on Long Island and I’m the middle child with two sisters. I’d say I was an active kid growing up.  I played baseball, skateboarded, snowboarded, ultimate Frisbee, and everyone’s favorite – manhunt.  In middle school, I did some wrestling but broke my collarbone during practice and never got back into it.

The Road to Recovery | A guide for grapplers recovering from an ACL tear

Some things are far worse than running out of coconut water and acai…

One of those things would be moving, which is exactly what I have been doing for the past month. Relocating can put a damper on writing and more importantly training. I wont lie, I was getting a bit bummed out about having to not be able to train as much as I would like. But last month when I was going through my final week at the gym in Brooklyn, I was on the mat as much as possible trying to get one last roll in with every one of my training partners. Towards the end of that week I saw one of the beasts in the gym show up finally. I was pumped because I had not had the chance to get that last roll in. Today would be that day. So I go up to my buddy Jake and start in on a little pre-training sarcastic taunting. Then I notice, he doesnt have a bag with him… He then sets up for the verbal submission that shuts down my entire game. He just came from the doctor and it turns out he has torn his ACL. Moving and missing a little training doesn’t sound bad at all anymore as we go into the whole process of what he has to undergo to get back into training. Injuries are never fun and never quick to recover from. Jake knows this because hell, the guy is in school to be a doctor.

Then it dawns on us that this is something that is common in the jiu jitsu world and would make for a great resource for all of those suffering from major injuries. It is not a battle of just healing but also how to mental, physically and nutritionally maintain throughout the process to get back on the mats in full force. I invited Jake to catalog his journey and bring it to you here on Grappler Gourmet. Not only does it keep me updated on my buddies recovery but also gives valuable insight from a professional. I will pass the torch over to Jake now for his first chapter because hey, I am not a doctor!

This past weekend concluded the awesome week long Food collaboration with Meerkatsu. The positive responses were staggering and has really made it all feel worth the while. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is more than just a sport, it really is a community and a lifestyle. Meerkatsu and myself have really embraced that theory and try and bring more than just on-the-mat techniques to the community. Why? Did you hear a bump in the night? Maybe it is the boogeyman coming to turn bad jiu jitsu players into good ones, or to talk about us about his diet!

This weeks interview is with 10th Planet San Diego‘s Richie “Boogeyman” Martinez. I had the awesome experience a few weeks ago of flying out to compete at the Dream Jiu Jitsu’s Baddest Blue. One of the highlights was getting to meet Richie and his brother Geo. After watching him work with some of his students that were competing you cannot help but notice a high level of passion and pride in the sport itself and more so in his students. Seeing this I had to get Richie in for an interview because he is truly the Boogeyman of the Jiu Jitsu world, instead of scaring bad kids into being good, he teaches BJJ in a way that leaves you feeling good. Within the first minute of meeting Boogey he was asking if anyone wanted to go to Starbucks in the parking lot, I needed more information than that to give you all so here we go.

This is the start of a new segment I have been working on with a ton of awesome people throughout the Jiu Jitsu community. I wanted to find out what everyone else’s eating on a regular basis and then share those recipes with you. I got the pleasure of working with Seymour “Meerkatsu” last Summer to develop our Meerkatsu x Grappler Gourmet’s Food Week. Where we designed a weeks worth of user friendly recipes for the BJJ lifestyle.  That event got a ton of awesome response. So now I have come up with a new segment using similar recipe cards that you all have grown familiar with but are now the favorite recipes of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu athletes, artists and community leaders. Who better to start off with than Meerkatsu!
