Some things are far worse than running out of coconut water and acai…
One of those things would be moving, which is exactly what I have been doing for the past month. Relocating can put a damper on writing and more importantly training. I wont lie, I was getting a bit bummed out about having to not be able to train as much as I would like. But last month when I was going through my final week at the gym in Brooklyn, I was on the mat as much as possible trying to get one last roll in with every one of my training partners. Towards the end of that week I saw one of the beasts in the gym show up finally. I was pumped because I had not had the chance to get that last roll in. Today would be that day. So I go up to my buddy Jake and start in on a little pre-training sarcastic taunting. Then I notice, he doesnt have a bag with him… He then sets up for the verbal submission that shuts down my entire game. He just came from the doctor and it turns out he has torn his ACL. Moving and missing a little training doesn’t sound bad at all anymore as we go into the whole process of what he has to undergo to get back into training. Injuries are never fun and never quick to recover from. Jake knows this because hell, the guy is in school to be a doctor.
Then it dawns on us that this is something that is common in the jiu jitsu world and would make for a great resource for all of those suffering from major injuries. It is not a battle of just healing but also how to mental, physically and nutritionally maintain throughout the process to get back on the mats in full force. I invited Jake to catalog his journey and bring it to you here on Grappler Gourmet. Not only does it keep me updated on my buddies recovery but also gives valuable insight from a professional. I will pass the torch over to Jake now for his first chapter because hey, I am not a doctor! Continue reading
Come one, come all! Feast your eyes (and stomachs) upon the most exciting BJJ event this side of the world!
That is right, Groundswell Grappling Concepts & Q5 Sports Nutrition are taking the show on the road starting this September 12th in the great state of Maine. During the carnival there will be a freak show, not as good as boogeyman puts on, that will be me serving up lunch and giving a cooking demo based around a lot of the concepts found here on this site to help improve how one lives the BJJ lifestyle off the mats and in the kitchen. You do not want to miss out on this event, trust me, it is going to be killer. For all of the details and to score your spot Continue reading
A year ago today this happened, one of the most exciting events in Gg history; I would like to say THANK YOU to Seymour and everyone else who showed their support in this event!
This past weekend concluded the awesome week long Food collaboration with Meerkatsu. The positive responses were staggering and has really made it all feel worth the while. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is more than just a sport, it really is a community and a lifestyle. Meerkatsu and myself have really embraced that theory and try and bring more than just on-the-mat techniques to the community. Why? Because if you do BJJ you know that it is more than just a hobby or a short term fix, it is a long term commitment and a way of life. To maintain you need to properly prepare yourself mentally and physically on a daily basis and what better way to do so than Continue reading
Screw killing two birds with one stone, one bowl of Kaleslaw will take down a whole army of birds.
This week I am offering up one multipurpose and ultra nutritious recipe. This kickass kaleslaw is packed with almonds, cashews, hemp seeds, kale, red cabbage AND flavor. We know by now that the best foods are the ones that we can make in advance, that are easy, and that give us the most bang for our buck nutritionally for our training. Well…you’ve read about kale and red cabbage somewhere right? I sure hope so because if you have not, you have been missing out. It is time to change that, this kaleslaw 10th planets the shit out of your typical coleslaw. Replacing all of those fatty and gross ingredients of your typical coleslaw with high end superfoods for one stop shopping. Kick some ass at meal time with our Kaleslaw. Continue reading
How you are winning gold in life before you even step foot on the mat come competition day.
There are a few different types of people found in every gym, you have the die hard competition guys/gals, the people who would compete but always find a reason not to, the ones who love the art but have no interest in competitions and finally those who are there only because it is a fun and different exercise. Yes those people exist. But ultimately I feel that everyone should try a competition at least once in their Jiu Jitsu careers because of the benefits that come from the preparation involved. Notice how I did not say the medals, the matches or any of that? That is because after many competition prep seasons I have learned that you earn the most out of the time leading up to the competition and not only from a Jiu Jitsu stand point, but overall lifestyle. Here are the most important lessons Continue reading
Did you hear a bump in the night? Maybe it is the boogeyman coming to turn bad jiu jitsu players into good ones, or to talk about us about his diet!
This weeks interview is with 10th Planet San Diego‘s Richie “Boogeyman” Martinez. I had the awesome experience a few weeks ago of flying out to compete at the Dream Jiu Jitsu’s Baddest Blue. One of the highlights was getting to meet Richie and his brother Geo. After watching him work with some of his students that were competing you cannot help but notice a high level of passion and pride in the sport itself and more so in his students. Seeing this I had to get Richie in for an interview because he is truly the Boogeyman of the Jiu Jitsu world, instead of scaring bad kids into being good, he teaches BJJ in a way that leaves you feeling good. Within the first minute of meeting Boogey he was asking if anyone wanted to go to Starbucks in the parking lot, I needed more information than that to give you all so here we go.
The Boogeyman cometh to ensure all of your chokes are snug and tight.
Sometimes you just need to take a rest day, today is that day.
Last week my fiance started a campaign to get me to Dream Jiu Jitsu’s Baddest Blue competition. And thanks to a lot of generous friends, training partners and parents I am blasting off to California this weekend to make a go of it. I am amazed at the support that the Jiu Jitsu community offers up and want to extend a huge THANK YOU…wait that is not huge enough… Continue reading
I am one lucky duck. Because I have a loving fiance that supports all of my big dreams no matter how small and dumb they are. Whether it is her convincing me that this site would be a great idea and to shut up and do it when it was just an idea or by going to all of those competitions and sitting with me for 8+ grueling hours of coaches yelling and buzzers constantly going off. She has now started this awesome campaign Continue reading
When bulking up for gains it helps to bulk up your grains.
None of us eat as much as we should or as often as we would like. Why is that? Because sometimes we are just down right tired after working, commuting and training. The last thing we want to think about is having to make a meal that will take over 10 minutes. So to build off an upcoming article I wrote for Jiu Jitsu Magazine, I cannot stress the importance of bulk cooking for the week enough. Rice is a food that everyone has sitting around their kitchen that takes around 45 minutes to make and should be added to any and all bulk cooking regiment. But why be so boring? Don’t you want to maximize your protein intake with every meal while also making your rice more creamy and flavorful? That is why adding quinoa is a no brainer. This article will Continue reading
To be the best you must work with the best
As many of you may or may not know I have had the pleasure of creating, in addition to for the site, some fun articles for the one and only Jiu Jitsu Mag. We may not be able to make it into the gym or onto the mats as often as we may like to but luckily there are other ways to keep up with our “training.” The BJJ lifestyle is labeled as such because it truly extends beyond the time we spend drilling, rolling and competing. Your jiu jitsu brain starts to creep into your everyday, you may find yourself at a lull in work and day dreaming about how a leg drag from open guard leads straight into a tibia break. But it should extend beyond only the techniques, there are many other major ways we can supplement our training, you know…like food…that is really the entire premise behind what I do! With that being said, Jiu Jitsu Magazine is truly one of the best Continue reading
